Araling Panlipunan contributes to the development of a holistically developed citizen who is aware and knowledgeable of and critically analyzes current social issues and concerns in the local and global level.
In Principles of Teaching 2 prepared by Hark del Rosario, it emphasizes that effective teaching of Araling Panlipunan is characterized with Meaningful Integrative Value, that is, it is meaningful when students see the relevance and connection of their lesson to their lives because it has real – world application. It also becomes meaningful when students are challenged to use disciplined inquiry or use high – order thinking skills to construct meaning. It is meaningful when learning is authentic.
The teaching principles also note that Araling Panlipunan itself is an integration of several interrelated disciplines – history, economics, geography, political science, sociology, anthropology, archeology and psychology. It is sensitive to and integrates multiple intelligences and learning styles of students. It integrates cognitive skills required in other disciplines as it provides opportunities for students to conduct inquiry, develop and display data, synthesize findings, and make judgments.
It further integrates effective use of technology, communication and reading/ writing skills that add important dimensions to students’ learning, according to el Rosario.
Finally, powerful and effective Araling Panlipunan teaching is value- driven because it’s intended outcomes the development of the mamayang mapanagutan, makalikasan, makabansa at makatao. Students learn democracy by experiencing democracy right there in the classroom. Its lessons are replete with value – laden concerns and issues where students listen to competing arguments, assess the merits of competing arguments and make informed and value-based decisions. In this reading, it is said that students will be more engaged in the lesson of they can see that it is happening in real life or it is related in their everyday living. They also said that it is more meaningful if the learning is authentic. We are using more modified ways in teaching students. We use technologies and other forms of technological gadgets just to transfer the lesson to them. But making the students engaged more or use their higher-order thinking skills with an authentic way of teaching is way better.“Someone may not be pulling the grade, not because they are not smart, They just dont have access to what all other kids have” The students will find the lesson interesting and they will study it on their own even if they’re not in school. Social studies is about the development of the whole world and people living on it.
